Australia is a sovereign country and one of the largest countries on Earth. Australia has been called “the Oldest Continent,” “the Last of Lands,” and “the Last Frontier.” Those descriptions typify the world’s fascination. It is the last of lands only in the sense that it was the last continent, apart from Antarctica, to be explored by Europeans. It has a federal form of government, with a national government for the Commonwealth of Australia and individual state governments (those of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania). Large cities such as Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide are located on the continent's coasts.

Australia was the 13th-largest national economy by nominal GDP, the 16th-largest stock exchange in the world in terms of domestic market capitalization and the largest interest rate derivatives market in Asia.
