The Hunter Valley wine industry is an element in Sydney's tourism economy, and the significance of this can be seen by comparing jobs created to grape production. In 2008, there were 4,469 hectares (11043 acres) devoted to red grapes with 1,687 planted for white varieties- however at harvest time 9263 tonnes of red wine was crushed on average 5.5 tonnes/hectare for that year! The Hunter Valley is a popular place for viticulture. In 2016, 19,310 tonnes of white wine grapes were crushed with an average 6.9 tons/hectare and 28% was estate grown-fruit while third came from outside the region like Cowra or Mudgee which are also New South Wales Wine regions that make up Southeast Australia designation in general.The laws for the Hunter Valley wine follow Australia's regulations as governed by the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation. For a grape variety to appear on the label of a varietal wine, it must represent at least 85% of that particular bottle with all percentages listed somewhere on its packaging. If instead you're looking for an amalgamation or mix-match between various wines, then each specific detail about those grapes should be noted in order from most important to less so; this includes any mixed vineyard location which represents at least 85%.
Upper Hunter Valley
The Upper Hunter Valley is the most northern and western subregion of what many consider to be Australia’s best region, The Hunter. Muswellbrook resides in this area as its primary town.Carl Brecht was one of the first Germans to settle in Upper Hunter. In 1860 he planted a vineyard at Wybong Creek which won him multiple gold medals for his wine from international competitions during 1870s and 1880s. The turn of 20th century events that saw decline throughout the entire valley would compound as it extinguished all viticulture for years to come, leading some people like Carl's son Fritz who would later become an acclaimed winemaker himself in California with wines such as Haut Brion Blanc, La Mission Halleck Semillon or even Vina Tarapaca Chardonnay among others not knowing what became of their father’s legacy.The Upper Hunter region of Australia is one that has a much hotter heat summation than the Lower Hunter with 2170 degree days (Celsius) to 2070 degree days generally seen. This area receives less rainfall annually, and most comes in late summer and early autumn meaning many vineyards need irrigation for their crops during the spring growing season as well as hot climate conditions impacting them more due to inland location from cooling sea breezes.The Upper Hunter region is home to several small wineries producing wines from the vines that surround them. Despite a decline in vineyard area since the withdrawal of large wine producers Rosemount and Arrowfield, these smaller operations continue on proudly for themselves and their neighbors nearby.
